Katarzyna Rostek, Ph.D., Professor at Warsaw University of Technology – research and teaching associate at the Faculty of Management at Warsaw University of Technology. Deputy Dean of Studies and member of the Senate Committee on Education in the 2016-2020 term. In the 2020-2024 term, President of the Scientific Council of the Management Science and Quality Department, member of the Senate of the Warsaw University of Technology, editor of the Foundations of Management journal. Reviewer of competition applications in successive editions of the accelerator program organized by the MIT Enterprise Forum CEE. Author of about 130 scientific publications, supervisor of about 100 diploma theses and three doctoral theses. Manager and participant in research and R&D projects, such as “Methodology of risk assessment for the needs of the crisis management system of the Republic of Poland” (NCBiR), “Highly specialised platform supporting civil planning and rescue in the public administration of the Republic of Poland” (NCBiR) and ENHANCERIA (Horizon 2020).

The Living Lab format

Living Labs are an innovative research format that fosters collaboration among researchers, stakeholders, and end-users in real-life settings. By promoting co-creation and co-design, they address complex societal challenges through the integration of diverse perspectives and expertise. Living Labs develop, test, and refine experimental solutions on-site, playing a crucial role in transdisciplinary research and sustainable development for societal transformation, which requires new support methods and tools.

Levels of societal engagement

As societal challenges grow, so does the role of universities in finding social and technological solutions. Universities have a prominent role to play in educating future innovators and developing desired technological and social change. The qualitative exploratory research conducted by the ENHANCE Alliance universities suggests that a higher level of societal engagement in scientific research has a positive impact on societal transformation towards sustainability. This research is also a first step towards making transdisciplinary research at universities, especially technical universities, more visible and transparent in order to provide better support and create a mutual learning environment for discussing and continuously developing strategies for organisational change.

Societal impact

Societal impact is a fundamental way in which transdisciplinary projects drive change and social transformation. At the ENHANCE Alliance, we are exploring ways in which transdisciplinary projects, initiatives and activities generate societal impact at different levels of their institutionalisation. We have also identified the need to define social impact metrics and to find effective ways to measure them on an ongoing and reliable basis, as a challenge and task for further collaboration within the Alliance.

A glossary on transdisciplinarity

The Glossary Living Document is a summary of the ENHANCE research efforts to understand the meaning and correlative elements of the concept of transdisciplinarity within the Alliance. The aim was to develop this glossary structure, spread and improve knowledge and raise awareness of transdisciplinary approaches in research, projects and collaborations towards a greater public. We propose an open, expandable, adaptable and updatable glossary as a space for the continuous collection of experiences, knowledge, competences and skills for transdisciplinary activities.
